Diplomacy is rarely handed to the young; it must be claimed. In an era defined by fractured geopolitics and shifting global alliances, the youth are frequently spoken for, but rarely listened to. The Chittagong University Model United Nations (CUMUN) was established to shatter that paradigm. As the largest, oldest, and most formidable diplomatic simulation in the southern region of Bangladesh, CUMUN returned for its definitive fourth edition from January 18 to 21, 2018, operating under a mandate that left no room for passive observation: "Creating A Difference."
Following three consecutive years of unparalleled institutional success since its inception in 2015, the Chittagong University Model United Nations Association raised the stakes for the 2018 session. The conference assembled an elite cohort of over 400 participants from premier institutions across both domestic and international circuits, alongside 29 specialized executive board members drawn from seven countries.
Under the overarching theme, "Entrusting Youth for Global Peace," CUMUN 2018 enacted a deliberate transfer of geopolitical responsibility. It operated on a profound truth: that the generation inside the committee rooms could no longer afford to wait for the future to inherit a broken world — they had to negotiate its repair in the present. Over four intense days, across ten highly specialized committees, these delegates faced rigorous parliamentary demands, uncompromising evaluation, and tight deadlines to prove that youth leadership is not an aspiration, but an immediate global necessity.

Behind the scenes
The Secretariat
The execution of the conference rested upon a synchronized administrative infrastructure drawn from the student body of the University of Chittagong. Every dimension of the four-day event — from academic curriculum and delegate logistics to venue operations and financial hospitality — was managed by a team that had invested months of strategic preparation. Their work formed the quiet, essential architecture beneath every committee session, plenary address, and logistical turn.

Moments from CUMUN 2018
Opening Ceremony
The auditorium opened with the national anthem. Secretary General and CUMUNA President Ahsan Habib officially inaugurated the fourth edition, setting an immediate standard for academic rigor. Special Guest Md. Ali Asgar Chowdhury, Proctor of the University of Chittagong, addressed the chamber, emphasizing that the youth are not merely the inheritors of national progress but its current driving force.
Socials
When formal sessions paused, the conference shifted from procedure to presence. The cultural evening placed delegates and Secretariat members on a shared stage for live performance, music, and dance — reinforcing the cross-institutional networks that sustain diplomatic communities long after hours.
Closing Ceremony
The conference concluded on January 21 with a closing ceremony that recognized the intense effort of four full days. Delegates received commendations for research, oratory, and consensus-building across all ten committees — transforming the final hours into a celebratory register that honored the collective achievement of the assembly.
