In late January 2023, the corridors of Chittagong University stirred back to a familiar rhythm: caucuses, pointed placards, and the careful architecture of draft resolutions. The occasion was the return of the Chittagong University Model United Nations Association's flagship conference, CUMUN 2023, held from 25 to 28 January — a homecoming that felt, to many, both overdue and urgently needed. As the largest and oldest Model UN gathering in southern Bangladesh, CUMUN had built its name across six editions between 2015 and 2020. The seventh arrived with a weighty proposition: "Promoting Adherence to Human Rights for Cessation of Violence through Peaceful Cohesion."
Nearly four hundred young delegates, drawn from institutions across the country and beyond, convened with position papers in hand and a quiet but shared resolve: to test whether multilateral frameworks can still be made to work. The four days that followed were built on the conviction that human rights are not a reward for peace, but a precondition for it — and that the practice of diplomacy, however simulated, must begin with that recognition. What unfolded over the sessions was an exercise in disciplined hope, an insistence that even the most intractable conflicts demand language before force, and that the next generation intends to sharpen that language.

Behind the scenes
The Secretariat
Executing a ten-committee summit for nearly four hundred delegates required an administrative matrix that was both logistically seamless and academically rigorous. The heavy machinery operating quietly in the background belonged to the organizing committee of the Chittagong University Model United Nations Association — tasked with reviving the premier MUN platform of southern Bangladesh after a quiet two-year hiatus.

Moments from CUMUN 2023
Opening Ceremony
The conference commenced with a poignant awareness of its own legacy, returning to the university corridors after a brief pause. Moving past ceremonial pleasantries, the opening addresses focused on the systemic fragility of global human rights frameworks, urging the assembly to treat their committee mandates as a severe intellectual obligation.
Socials
The evening socials served as a vital release valve for the intense energy of the day. Stepping away from the strict confines of international law and parliamentary procedure, participants connected through shared laughter, music, and casual conversations — proving that the strongest alliances are often forged outside the formal committee walls.
Closing Ceremony
The final gavels resonated across the university on 28 January 2023, bringing the four-day exercise in disciplined hope to an end. Delegates were honored not just for defensive rhetoric, but for their willingness to seek common ground in an increasingly fractured world — concluding a historic homecoming for the CUMUN legacy.
